They represent several swing states and are made up of seven independents, three Democrats, and two Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Each month leading up to the November election, The Deciders checks in with a group of voters who will be outsized in choosing the country&#8217;s next president. These voters have talked about their opinions on the presidential race and the issues that will affect their votes. The initiative is a partnership between Sago, Engagious, NBC News and Syracuse University&#8217;s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WyIAQfvaeIM[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor1\">Views of Trump\u2019s Years in Office<\/h3>\n<p>During the focus group discussions, the voters seemed to favor Donald Trump over Kamala Harris. Part of their support for Trump was due to how they remember his administration.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to describe what life was like in the United States during Trump\u2019s years in office, their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProsperous is the word. Economy was good. Jobs were good.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI feel like it was hopeful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLife was OK. It wasn\u2019t really bad. It wasn\u2019t really, really great, but I felt like I was surviving.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAll I can really think is sad.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDuring that time, it was OK.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRobust.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProsperous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would say it was just normal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGrowing divide.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUnpredictable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor2\">Views of the Biden Administration<\/h3>\n<p>In contrast, the participants didn\u2019t discuss the Biden years so positively. When asked to describe American life during the Biden administration, their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStruggling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cConfusing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDifficult.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnxious.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI would say I was hopeful\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDeclining.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMore difficult, harder.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTroubling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCrashing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor3\">What They Like About Trump<\/h3>\n<p>When the 2020 non-voters were asked how they felt about Trump personally, the list of things they like included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNot a career politician.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBusiness-minded.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSuccessful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGets stuff done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCaptivating.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think he is a very, very smart man, especially when it comes to finances and money and I think that\u2019s something that America can always benefit from.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t back down no matter what anyone throws at him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think he\u2019s willing to make an unpopular choice.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;greenpostquote&#8221;]\u201cI think he is a very, very smart man, especially when it comes to finances and money and I think that\u2019s something that America can always benefit from.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor4\">How They Feel About Harris<\/h3>\n<p>The list of things the focus group participants liked about Harris included words like \u201ccomforting,\u201d \u201ccaring\u201d and \u201ceducated.\u201d They said she \u201cmeans well\u201d and is a \u201cnice person.\u201d However, they had much more to say about why they didn\u2019t like Harris. Their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI dislike that I don\u2019t know much.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI dislike her stance on some of her criminalization and prosecution efforts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI dislike that she wasn\u2019t more present before being nominated as the presidential candidate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI dislike how she doesn\u2019t really focus on one issue. She kind of dodges it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe just doesn\u2019t feel genuine to me. A lot of what she says and does feels fake to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI feel like she\u2019s kind of a puppet. I feel like somebody else is pulling the strings. I feel like she\u2019s saying what other people are having her say and I don\u2019t know that it\u2019s necessarily all her agenda.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think she\u2019s been the second most powerful person in the entire world for four years and hasn\u2019t shown much action.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor5\">Concerns About a Second Trump Presidency<\/h3>\n<p>These 2020 non-voters do have concerns about Trump, though. As they spoke about their fears about a second Trump presidency, their comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf he were to get elected, I would be afraid he would spend his whole term Twitter fighting and fighting in the courts rather than being president.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe capital riot, that really left a number on me \u2026 there\u2019s hardcore on both sides, but that was just like a terrorist attack. It was crazy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m afraid that he may do something that would harm or directly affect Social Security.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe disappearance of middle class altogether, a bigger divide between the richer and the poor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m worried about myself and my daughters, losing more rights to our bodies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m worried about him supporting the project 2025 agenda.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn cahoots with Russia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, knowing that Trump was president before seemed to ease some of these worries. Their support for Trump is transactional, though. If these 2020 non-voters vote for him in the 2024 election, they expect prices to become more affordable.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgbox&#8221; conditional_render=&#8221;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8221;][vc_column conditional_render=&#8221;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8221;][vc_row_inner equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221; el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgboxinner&#8221;][vc_column_inner el_class=&#8221;mainpostimgboximg&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9004111222026727&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor6\">Concerns About a Harris Presidency<\/h3>\n<p>The focus group participants have fears about Harris as president, too. Their concerns included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI fear that if she gets elected, the country will be even more divided and that she won\u2019t be powerful enough to help alleviate it or calm it down. Then things might get kind of out of control under her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m afraid that if she tries to do all the things that she wants to do, like building three million new homes and plans for this and plans for that, that the deficit is just going to spiral out of control.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI worry that her desire to be liked might take precedence in her decision making.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGoing back and forth. Saying the right thing to get elected and doing the wrong thing or at least not what [she was] elected to do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m afraid that she\u2019ll ruin the economy more than it already is, based off her proposed economic ideas.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anchor7\">Who They Plan to Vote For<\/h3>\n<p>The focus groups included seven independents, three Democrats, and two Republicans. Out of these 12, eight people were leaning toward voting for Trump and the other four were leaning toward Harris. However, between when the participants signed up to be part of the focus groups and when the groups actually took place, some had changed their minds.<\/p>\n<p>One woman from Georgia initially said she was leaning toward Harris. During the focus group, however, she said she was more likely to vote for Trump. Her comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think the media coverage and a lot of things I\u2019ve seen on social media has made my indecisiveness even stronger. Now, I\u2019m leaning towards Trump, simply because I see the way on my life and my family\u2019s situation has declined since the Biden-Harris administration \u2026 The economy is the main thing. I feel like that\u2019s the first thing that needs to be straightened out, before we can even address all of the other issues. And so that\u2019s my main reason.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, this participant said that she might decide not to vote on Nov. 5. Here\u2019s how she explained not voting in 2020 and why she may not vote this year :<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;There is some fearmongering that I\u2019ve fallen subject to. I\u2019m really worried about the project 2025 agenda. I feel like if I don\u2019t want to make the wrong decision, maybe I should just sit it out, which is why I sat out the last election, because I couldn\u2019t support either candidate.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;calloutmatte&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>Need insights from the voices that matter?
