Pioneering the Future of Pediatric Health

In an ambitious leap forward for pediatric health, Northwestern University and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) joined forces to tackle a groundbreaking challenge: developing a universal neurodevelopmental assessment for infants and toddlers that truly reflects America’s rich diversity. Read on and learn more about how their partnership with Sago helped them not only achieve this monumental task but also pave new paths for understanding child health development on a national scale.

Challenge

Northwestern University, in close collaboration with the NICHD at the National Institute of Health (NIH), faced the formidable task of creating a standard set of neurodevelopmental assessment measures for infants and toddlers. There was a need to accurately represent the United States‘ diverse population by enrolling over 2,500 participant children from various racial, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds across different community densities. This required conducting assessments at 14 sites nationwide, a challenge that demanded an innovative approach to accurately measure and map children’s neurodevelopment in a genuinely representative and engaging manner.

Solution

Sago’s multifaced strategy combined logistical coordination with advanced, child-friendly assessment methodologies. By utilizing a mix of technology, including iPads, and traditional toys, our team was able to interact with infants and toddlers through age-appropriate activities and conduct 2,500 successful assessments. These activities, designed to be both engaging and indicative of developmental progress, ranged from 30 minutes to two hours. Through careful observation and documentation of play behaviors, Sago’s approach not only adhered to the project’s scientific protocol rigor but also ensured that the assessments were conducted efficiently and enjoyably for the children involved.

Result

This project is notable for its operational excellence and substantial contribution to pediatric research. The project’s success has facilitated a wealth of data that will benefit clinicians, educators, and the broader medical community. Additionally, the innovative engagement techniques used during the study have set new standards in the field, ensuring comprehensive coverage and opening avenues for future pediatric health development initiatives. Because of this success, Northwestern University plans to continue its long-standing engagement with Sago for future projects, reaffirming the lasting impact and potential of this collaborative effort in promoting health development for children across the U.S.
